It’s finally election season, that magical time of year when every high schooler with Internet access transforms into an expert on everything from the Iranian nuclear deal to immigration law to the federal deficit. Westford Academy, luckily for all of us, has not been spared.
Some of the most visible political activism at WA has taken place on behalf of GOP front-runner Donald Trump, a candidate who, as many Westford students assert, “represents us downtrodden, hard-working Americans.”
“I really like that he says what’s on his mind, you know, cause so many people today are all PC and everything, but he just says what he thinks even if it is incredibly offensive or inaccurate,” says one WA senior on Trump. “Whenever I try to do that people call me a bigot, or a racist, or a sexist or some other hurtful name, and I’m just so glad that somebody’s finally standing up for my rights. I mean, we don’t even have racism in America anymore.”
These students provided various intellectual reasons for supporting Trump, but one issue was constant: immigration.
“He’s tough on immigration, and that’s important to me because I see the effects of illegal immigration every day. Well, actually just once. I saw a Mexican man. And Trump wants to build a wall to keep them all out—I mean some of them. I’m sure they’re not all terrible; it’s not like I’m racist or something. But I think the wall is a great idea because they take jobs from us hard-working Americans, which is totally unfair because we were here first. It’s our country and they’re taking advantage of it,” explained another Trump-supporting student.
When asked where his ancestors came from, this student replied, “They came over in the 1700s, actually. They had to fight the Indians for their God-given right to America and all that. Why do you ask?”
Another common reason given was that he is the only viable candidate. One student says, “Obviously I support Trump. Bernie Sanders is a socialist, and socialist countries are awful. Just look at Scandinavia; they hate it there. And Hillary is just so shrill, and she’s not attractive. Like look at her face, who’d vote for that? And all the other Republicans are idiots, like Trump said. Donald is really the only candidate who is willing to elevate the downtrodden upper class back to their deserved position in society.”
The Trump supporters will be holding a rally this Tuesday, primary day in Massachusetts, providing the school with a demonstration of mid-twentieth century European fascism and calling for the repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment.
“I can totally sympathize with all those Americans who had their jobs stolen by Mexicans,” explained one supporter. “After all, if it weren’t for those Asian immigrants, I’d be going to Harvard right now.”
